Rules for Pick of The Year (PoTY) 2021

Well, it was another week of a whole lot of nothing for our contestants. Karel’s MED did take over second place, but only three of our picks remain in the green. The thing is, all three indices are showing gains since we started, but those gains simply aren’t translating to our picks for the most part. There’s still a long way to go, so let’s see what happens from here on out.

The indeces are weighted heavily with tech (FAANG) stocks... FB, GOOG, NFLX, AAPL, etc and others which did really well during the pandemic due to all the work-from-home activity. None of our picks were in that area, oddly enough. Guess we all thought it was baked into the already high prices in January.... but stocks do funny things!

PotY Contest Standings As of Market Close, July 23, 2021

Oh, the humanity! Here we are deep into July, and only Jiesen’s TSLA short is beating the market. So far, this just hasn’t been a good year for the PotY longs. Maybe that will change before the year ends. Maybe it won’t. Maybe Mike Tyson will win a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in ear biting. Who knows what surprises the year still holds.

PotY Contest Standings As of Market Close, July 30, 2021

Congrats, Karel, on having only the second pick, MED, to beat the indices so far. In this year’s contest, that’s quite an accomplishment, especially with a long. Jiesen continues his long run in first place with his excellent TSLA short, and the only other pick in the green is Louetta’s SAN pick. Kudos to our three front runners for their outstanding picks. As for the rest of us … well … there have certainly been some interesting and promising moves, but only Mr. Market’s TRUP and Blind Squirrel’s KNSL are close to floating in this Red Sea of a market. We are heading into August now, past the halfway mark with only five months to go. Giddy up, market, giddy up.

We had a slight shakeup near the top this week as Louetta’s SAN vaulted into second place, and is now beating all three indices. Karel’s MED also remains in the green, but pulled back a little and now lags the indices. Still, SAN and MED remain as the only long picks that are in positive territory for the year. Jiesen’s TSLA short continues to hang on to first place and has been there for quite a while now. Is there no on else? Are you not entertained?!?!

We’re into August now, and many of our long positions are showing little signs of life. The clock is starting to count down now, so it’s time for some of these picks to get the lead out of their pants if they have any hope of getting into the race. Come on, man!

Another week and no fairy dust for the battered longs in the 2021 PotY content. Oh the humanity! Jiesen’s stellar short, TSLA, remains in first place by the narrowest of margins as Louetta’s long, SAN, is now only 0.33 percentage behind. This is exciting. Will SAN kick into gear and pass TSLA? Will one of the entries trip and fall in the home stretch and have to be put down? I know I am ready to put my pick to sleep. Let’s see what the next four and a half months bring us.

Do I even have to say it? I guess I do. Blah! Another week of a whole lotta nuthin’. There was a momentary challenge for the top spot by Louetta’s SAN last week, but this week put things back into perspective for the longs as Jiesen’s TSLA once again claimed first place and actually widened it’s lead to 10%+. Blind Squirrel’s KNSL continues to battle it’s way towards the green, and this week it vaulted ahead of Karel’s frisky pick, MED. KNSL now settles in on the leader board in third place. Keep the faith, pickers, and perhaps the Gods of the market will favor with a big week.

Oh woe are we! After this week, not a single pick is beating all three indices. Our leader for most of the year, Jiesen’s TSLA, still holds a solid lead and is at least beating the Dow. Louetta’s SAN, our only other pick in the green, continues to hold down second place followed by Blind Squirrel’s KNSL. After that things range from right-on-the-verge to, well, not so right-on-the-verge. Still we have four months to sort things out and host a couple of rallies so let’s get to it.
