    Rob,
After reading your commentary on the POTW there is no doubt in my mind that you could talk your way through a conversation with anyone and hold your own. Especially if they were a pretty young woman. Those pickup lines would make the top 20 list of the worst anywhere anytime.

I told Lye and Mrs. Lye my philosophy about grocery store lines: if all the lines look like about equal wait-time, then I pick the one with the prettiest checker, because I figure as long as I have to stand there anyway, I'd much rather have a pretty checkout girl to deal with.
No.... Not exactly what happened, remember you were drinkin' those super HUUUUGE happy hour Margaritas so your memory is a bit distorted.... jejejejeeeee!

Actually the way pretty girls came up at dinner is this: You ordered some kind of Mexican chicken dish and then for some reason you told Mrs. Rockin'Rob that I liked "El Pollo Loco Chicken".... Then she (as a native Cali girl knowing that no El Pollo Loco Chicken can be found in these parts) looked at me and said; "When have you eaten "El Pollo Loco Chicken"?.... I then said; "Back in 2003 when we were in California, and I ate the stuff every chance I got"....

Then I continued...."You know it's funny that every El Pollo Loco I visited out there had extraordinarily pretty Hispanic girls working there to take your order.... EVERY Single ONE!"....

Mrs. Lyehopper then looked at me and rolled her eyes.... Then Rockin'Rob made the "Kroger checkout line statement".... And then Mrs. Rockin'Rob called us "both dirty old men".... Ain't that about the way it went Rob?....LOL!

'Ya know Lye...I think you are remembering it better than it really was...El Pollo Loco sux...Where the h*ll do they get these Grade D chickens?...I've come to the conclusion that your fond memories are not of the chicken...they are of the girls who worked there...Which I pretty much have to agree with you on that part.

Now let's take KFC...Whoa!!!...They must have a requirement that you have to flunk a test to work there...Speaking of the Colonel...I believe I mentioned that my Grandparents on my Dad's side were from KY...Well, one of my distant 7th cousin's or something was a waitress at his original joint...When he wanted to expand she gave him a loan.

So Rob's wife is from CA...Did I know that? Where from Rob?...I'm a native although I was born in San Francisco...moved to Seattle...then when I was 2 we moved to Venice(Now known as Marina Adjacent)...then to Culver City when I was 4...Went to school in CC K-12 except when I was in 4th Grade...Houston TX...Spring Branch Elementary for one year...Went to U of NE...then U of HI...then back to U of NE...then West LA...then Pasadena...then Redondo Beach when I got divorced in '83...then back to West LA when I got remarried in '86.

As a side note my wife and I took this online survey about 4 years ago regarding your ideal place to retire...Mine came up as Pahrump, NV and her's came up in some town in NJ...Guess we won't being seeing much of each other in our Golden Years...LOL

I said, "I guess we must have been talking about standing in checkout lines at grocery stores or something." See? I said, "or something." But as long as we're trying to factually reconstruct the event, I only had one super HUUUUGE happy hour margarita, and I did not order chicken; I ordered beef. I do recall El Pollo Loco coming up in the conversation, and I suppose that could have been the lead-in to my grocery store comment. I don't remember Mrs. Rob calling us dirty old men, but I'm sure you're right about that, because it sounds exactly like something she would say in those circumstances.

I think the thing Lye likes about those places is the salsa bar. When I lived in CA, I didn't frequent El Pollo Loco, so I don't remember the thing about the girls working there.

That reminds me of something that happened here recently at a little coffee shop place. I handed the cashier my bill (they call it a "ticket" here ) and some cash. My change due was $12 and change, so I asked her if she could give me two fives instead of the ten, and it confused her so much that another girl working nearby had to come and help her. I feel bad for that girl.

Do you know how far back you have to go to get the common ancestor for 7th-cousins? Nine generations. If you were born in '53 and you consider an average of say about 25 years per generation, the common ancestors you and your 7th-cousin share would have been born around the late 1720s, roughly speaking, about the same time as George Washington (b. 1732).

She was born in Hollywood and raised in a section of North Hills that used to be part of Sepulveda in the San Fernando Valley. It's not far from the CSU Northridge campus. She lived in the same house (on Hayvenhurst Ave.) from the day she was born till the day I snatched her away.

However here is a family relationship chart...I think it contradicts what the previous site says a little bit...not sure w/o checking:

The Island Register - Family Relationship Chart. Explains those mysterious Cousins Removed!

Now...I really don't know what the relationship is...I'll have to ask my Dad...but I'm assuming it has to be a half relative since my Grandfather had 18 half siblings.

Really strange though...As far as my Dad ever knew up until the early 90's my Grandfather only had 2 half siblings...then my Dad gets on this kick about wanting to join the Sons of The American Revolution...He started with my Grandmother's side because she had left some sketchy info going back to the late 1700's. But he hit a lot of dead ends and found some mis-info.

Somehow he ran across this woman in Virginia on my Grandfather's side. She had a database that she had started in the 50's with other 18,000 relatives. But they were not really all blood relatives because she would add people like my wife's Grandparents...when people got married she'd want all the info on the spouse's side. She had a dead end though on my Grandfather since he was the oldest half sibling and probably the first one to leave the South circa 1920...And obviously he didn't keep in touch much since my Dad had never heard of 16 of his half aunts and uncles.

My Dad calls this woman his 7th cousin...but I'm not sure why?...He also has been to a few Gregory family reunions down South since...Funny how he always calls them "His" relatives...Aren't they my relatives too?...But I know none of them.

Anyway...he was able to locate a relative back to the late 1690's...But they were in England...I told him that I don't think it counts for membership in the Sons of the AR if they fought for the other side.

For some reason after he located this 7th cousin he gave up on searching my Grandmother's side. Actually, she did have info on a General who fought in the AR...but the line was broken in the 1800's and he never could prove a direct line.

I know very few of my relatives on either side...most of them are not close. Right now I have my Mom, Dad, Sister, Son, 2 Grandkids and one first cousin...Everyone else is what I would call a distant relative...But as my Grandfather always said:

"Just 'cause they're relatives doesn't mean you have to like 'em"

I think in most states from 2nd cousin on you are not considered relatives for marriage purposes. Maybe even 1st cousins in some states???

FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt were 5th cousins...And they knew it...IIC

I think FDR's parents were also related in some distant way.

I once found out that a girl I had been "dating" was a distant cousin... that ended things very fast! YIKES!!!!!
