    Scifos,
Was it Benjamin Graham who tried to buy stocks of companies that if liquidated were worth much more than their stock price? Like GM today.

Yeah, but he used current assets minus TOTAL liabilities, and required a 33% margin of safety. Do a google search for Graham Net current asset value.

GM is $300 BILLION-baby-BIIIIILLION--in debt. I doubt that, if liquidated, they would have anything left over except maybe $250Billions in debt.

Much of AKS performace came today as several of the steel producers announced good earnings, and the whole sector is up http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060124/steel_movers.html?.v=1

AKS is also up on rumors of it being a takeover target.

bought SMP and CNH today, same screen as above. Closed out WLM for +4.14% and LVB (one day only) at +0.07%

                  Currently:
                  AKS +33.51%
                  BXC +7.03%
                  GT +2.06%
                  KWD -1.73%
LVB In 1/[email protected] Out 1/25 @ 29.80 (+0.07%) Its never bad to take a gain!
                  RML +11.38%
                  RYI +11.82%
                  WLM In 1/18 @ 7.00 Out 1/25 @ 7.29 (+4.14%)
                  CNH -0.16%
                  SMP +1.19%

Perhaps I should reconsider selection criteria, in the light of LVB being a 1-dayer. SMP is pretty close as well.

Another strong day, especially for AKS. The steel sector had another good day, and takover rumors plus an upgrade continue to propel AKS. I'd up stops on most of these, particularily the big gainers AKS and RYI.

Bad news for GT: Its down 7.5% in aftermarket trading.
4:32PM Goodyear Tire sees Q4 revs of more than $4.9 bln vs $5.09 bln Reuters consensus (GT) 18.76 -0.11 : The company said it anticipates Q4 sales of more than $4.9 bln (consensus $5.09 bln), and 2005 sales of almost $20 bln (consensus $19.88 bln). It expects 2005 segment operating income to be up between 20-25% from 2004. Excluding the impact of hurricanes in the U.S. Gulf Coast region, Q4 segment operating income is expected to approximate the $238 mln achieved in the prior year period. Goodyear said raw material costs increased approximately 13% in Q4, more than it had anticipated. Consistent with its plans to focus on its cash and working capital requirements, Goodyear reduced global tire inventories through production adjustments during the quarter, particularly in Europe and Latin America. "We are working worldwide to reduce our costs and working capital needs, as well as to further improve our product and brand mix... Nevertheless, the escalating cost of raw materials and currency fluctuations continue to challenge our businesses."

A mixed day today with BXC doing well, and GT didn't slide further today. Fortuanately, strong gains in other screen picks has offset GT. A protective stop would have saved a holder from some of the decline.

No changes in the screen results to report. Note that CNH is 0.17 from its target, and would be a 3.53% gain.

CNH hit its target of 19.67 (+3.53%) today.

I'm wondering about how to set stops on some of these, especially in the cases of GT and AKS, where GT had a big tumble on bad news, and AKS shot up so fast. Not sure how I would have played AKS if it were a real holding (this is just keeping track of one screen of mine.) I'm actually playing AKS short in the Portfolio of the Year contest and I think I'm doing pretty well with it there.

Does anyone have comments on strategies for placing stops?

My basic stop is at 7% below my initial entry. Depending upon how volitaile I feel the stock is I may place it a little closer at between 4 to 6 % below the initial entry. But 7% is where I draw the line in the sand and will exit if it hits that point. Another method I like is using a fib level or a moving average line like the 20 or 50. Sometimes a trend line will coincide with a moving average and you can get two lines of support or resistance for the price of one. You really have to begin to use and honor them and kind of evolve into what bests suits you and your strategys and needs to protect your capital. One thing for certain is that when using them get used to the fact that you may, can, and will get actually stopped out. This is where a concrete trading strategy and discipline come into play. Having the self-control and patience to live with the outcome is the key. Also knowing that you believe in what you;re doing is the right thing for you is important so that when you do get stopped out you shrug it off and move on to the next trade without letting it screw your head up. It's very hard to do and to learn to do an only comes with steely hard determination to honor your strategys.
