Stocks for the Long Term

I was expecting the market to continue down this week, and on Monday it looked like that would be true. Then the election came and went and the market headed back up before pausing on Friday. In any event, I decided to get some skin in the game and did quite a bit of buying this week. If the market takes out the prior pivot high from Oct 13, that will end up being a good decision. If not, I may have to treat these as swing trades and get out quickly. We’ll see. One note on my lists. In updating it this week, I noticed that I had omitted one position, CRSP, that was still open in one of my accounts so I added it although it is not a new position and is therefore not bolded.

With the market continuing its weakness, I sold off a few more stocks and now sit 94% in cash with just three open positions. I don’t like the market technicals and don’t plan to start buying in the near future. I want to see how this weakness plays out, especially with the election right around the corner.

I added four new positions this week, but I have to admit that I am getting a little nervous. I can’t really put my finger on it, and it may just be intuition, which isn’t exactly a good indicator for trading. Still, there are some concrete indicators that warrant caution. I looked at a lot of scans this weekend, and I saw a lot of what I call “exhaustion patterns.” In the past, this has been a good indicator of an impending market reversal more often than not. Thursday’s market drop and tepid recovery is also a basis for caution. The market gapped down hard on Thursday and then bounced immediately. On Friday, however, the market started to roll over again, cutting into Thursday’s recovery and closing near the low of the day (LOD). In any event, I am looking at my current positions more as swing positions than long term holds, and I am prepared to sell them quickly if needed. I originally thought the market would make new highs after the shallow retrace, and it still might, but until the indices take out Thursday’s highs, I will remain uneasy about this. Nano-X Imaging (NNOX) is back in the news again with a promise they will demonstrate their technology at Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) annual meeting. The street is very divided over this company. Muddy Waters and Citron have both called this company a complete fraud, while Cantor Fitzgerald has given it an overweight rating with a $70 price target. I was lucky enough to make a nice profit off this company in the earliest days of the IPO. I took a second position, but got out with a small loss after I read the Citron opinion. I’m not sure what to make of it at this point, but I will say this. If the technology they described in their prospectus and on their website is legitimate, this company is going to explode. The RSNA meeting starts on Nov 29 and runs through Dec 5. I will be watching carefully and might even make another run at it at some point. If it goes bad, I’d love to short it since both Citron and Muddy Waters are saying this stock will go to $0, but it has been on everybody’s hard-to-borrow list so that isn’t an option right now. We’ll just have to stay tuned.

I had a very busy week, and I ended up adding 11 new positions to my portfolio. I may end up regretting this, but it at least gave me some skin in the game in the event that the market decides to move up from here. Today’s (Friday’s) action was a little disappointing as mixed economic numbers bumped the market to the downside. I’m still 80% in cash and it will take more bullish signaling before I get anymore invested.

It was a light week again, although I did add a full position in QDEL. I’m still watching cautiously, although I am starting to see some signs of life in the market. I wish I had opened a position in one of my favorites, ZM, as it has taken off over the last two weeks, but, alas, I did not. It might be time to start getting a little more aggressive, though. Now short activist Muddy Waters Research is piling on NNOX. Good thing I got out when I did. Hard to believe I actually made money on it, but it did look good on paper. I guess the old adage remains true: “When it sounds too good to be true ... .”

I dumped my latest NNOX position for a small loss. The Citron report was just too worrisome. I’ll keep it around on my tier 3 watchlist and check in on it as the story develops. So I’m down to a 1/2 position in IPOB and a very small position (less than 1/2 position) in PI. Still watching and waiting.

Oh, oh. Citron, who admittedly doesn’t have the best record for being correct, has nevertheless issued a scathing report on NNOX. I am going to read it in depth tonight and watch the chart carefully to see how seriously the market is taking it. I might have to close my recently re-opened position. I made a nice profit on my Round 4 investment, but I don’t want to be married to a fraud. It sounds so good on paper, maybe it is too good to be true.

Added a position In IPOB this week, but other than that, no activity. I’m just watching and waiting to see how things shake out.

Bought back my NNOX and I still have a few shares of PI in a small Ameritrade account I never migrated, but other than that I’m flat and watching intensely.

When the right time comes, I’ll buy back in, but I have no idea when that will be, and there is no guarantee I will time it right. In the meantime, I have organized my watchlists into three tiers, with tier 1 being the stocks I’d most like a position in. This doesn’t mean I will buy all my tier 1 stocks first. I still need what appears to be a good entry, but when scanning for entries, I’ll start with the tier 1 stocks first and then move down the tiers. As I move down, the entries need to be more enticing, i.e. I need an outstanding looking entry for a tier 3 stock because I have less confidence in its growth potential than a tier 1 or 2.
