It was another week for me, although I did add one new position, AAPL. While I’m not hitting it out of the park, I am pleased with the return on principal. I try to shoot for at least 10% each year, and barring getting swept up in a major market reversal, I have already exceeded that (by far) for this year with round 2 and 3 factored in. I still have some apprehension about a few stocks, and next week I may either totally close or pare back a few positions.

In cautious mood, I didn’t add any new positions this week. Part of that was because, in a contrast to recent weeks, the NASDAQ reined in a bit while the Dow and S&P rallied. Most of my investment are tech stocks, and, therefore, NASDAQ stocks. Overall performance has been modest, thanks to a few positions that are not performing well. AYX, in particular, gives me some reason for concern. I still see enormous potential in this company, but I’m not one to hold on to a stock through a long stagnant period so I will just have to see.

My positions started the week doing quite well, including a few breakouts. Late in the week, however, two of my positions took hits because of disappointing earnings or guidance.

The biggest hit was on AYX which missed on earnings and then issued weak guidance, citing problems in the sales pipeline partially because of the effects of COVID-19 on their sales force. I will have to re-assess this one because it’s one thing to miss on earnings, but the downgrade in guidance indicates that it might take a while for this stock to recover. I still like the long term prospects of this company, so for those not it the stock, this might present a good opportunity for entry.

DDOG also took a hit after earnings. The surprising thing was that they beat on earnings and improved guidance. They also got upgrades from JP Morgan and Credit Susie. So why the sell off? My best guess is that there was simply some profit taking after the big run up in this stock. While they beat on earnings, it probably wasn’t enough for some investors who are concerned about the high valuation. I still think there is a lot of growth left in this company so I doubt I will sell. There is even a possibility I will add when the stock starts to bounce.

Round 4 New Positions (8/7/2020)
CRSP
CRSP is a gene-editing company engaged in the development of CRISPR/Cas9-based therapeutics. CRISPR/Cas9 is a technology that allows for precise, directed changes to genomic DNA. Currently the company has programs that target blood disorders that have a high unmet medical need such as sickle cell disease. The overall potential of CRISPR technology is enormous and CRSP is one of only two companies that are leading the way in developing this technology, the other being EDIT, which I also own. The CRISPR technology market is expected to grow from $562 million in 2018 to $1,715 million by 2023, at a CAGR of 25%. This technology is just starting to achieve a level of maturity and this is reflected in the revenue and earnings explosion at CRSP over the last two years. I like the size of the served market, the innovative nature of technology, and the growth story at CRSP, so I am in.

NVDA (From my previous writeup in 2019)
Everyone knows NVDA as a designer of graphics chips for PCs. Because some of their graphics chips are at the very high end of performance, they are also associated with the most demanding of graphics applications such as VR and gaming. Is that why I like this company so much? Well, yes and no. VR and gaming certainly present appealing opportunities for growth, but I have other reasons for liking NVDA. It just so happens that NVDA is also a major provider of chips for data centers and AI applications, both of which are areas in which there is a huge potential for growth. Almost in the shadows, NVDA has been growing its data center revenue at an astonishing rate. Last quarter the year-over-year growth was over 70%, and this is just the beginning. NVDA’s opportunity in the data center market has been pegged to be around $30B, or almost three times their current total annual revenue. Wow. And just as AI is on the verge of a major breakout, NVDA is positioned to be a dominant player. That’s because NVDA, with their massively parallel processors, is better positioned to support AI and deep learning applications than any other company. NVDA’s graphics processing units (GPUs) have thousands of cores as opposed to the 8-16 cores of high end central processing units (CPUs). In fact, NVDA’s GPUs have proven to be about 10 times more effective than traditional CPUs for AI tasks. This is why they are in such demand for applications such as autonomous automobiles. NVDA’s opportunities in data center and AI paint a very appealing growth opportunity, and there is no bigger driver of share price than growth so I am in.

PANW
PANW is a pure-play cybersecurity vendor that sells security appliances, subscriptions, and support into enterprises, government entities, and service providers. The company's product portfolio includes firewall appliances, virtual firewalls, endpoint protection, cloud security, and cybersecurity analytics. Obviously cybersecurity has become a hot area over the last few years and this has created a huge served market. The global cybersecurity market is predicted to grow from $167.1B in 2019 to $248.26B by 2023, attaining a 10.4% CAGR. PANW is well positioned to increase its penetration of this market and its revenue numbers reflect this. Over the last five years revenue has grown from $930 million to $2.9 billion, a 211% increase. This year, PANW is on track to add another 12% to that number. This is a great growth story with an enormous served market so I am in.

PI
PI operates a platform that enables wireless connectivity to everyday items by delivering each item's identity, location, and authenticity to business and consumer applications, i.e. it’s a Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) chip maker serving the Internet of Things (IoT) market. Its platform includes miniature radios-on-a-chip, which attach to and identify their host items, and connectivity products such as readers and gateways that wirelessly identify, locate, authenticate, and engage with objects. The market for this technology is enormous. The global IoT market size was valued at USD 212.1 Billion in 2018 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 25.68% from 2019-2026 and reach USD 1,319.08 Billion by 2026. We’re talking about a trillion dollar served market here. How well has PI done within this market? Over the last five years PI has experienced 95% growth in revenue, but at the current revenue level of only $155, the potential for growth is enormous, and so I am in.

ZS
ZS is a security-as-a-service firm that offers its customers cloud-delivered solutions for protecting user devices and data. In an innovative twist, ZS leverages its position in 150 colocation data centers to deliver traditionally appliance-based security functionality, such as firewalls and sandboxes, as a completely cloud-native platform. Yes, this is another security play, but ZS specializes in cloud-based security, which is relatively new trend in security technology. The served market, while not as enormous as the markets for other technologies I have invested in, is still growing at a rapid rate. The global cloud security market size is projected to grow from $34.5 billion in 2020 to $68.5 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 14.7%. ZS has done a terrific job at exploiting the growing market and positioning itself for the future. In the last five years, revenue at ZS has grown a whopping 464%. This year the company expects to grow revenue by another 29%. ZS represents a tremendous opportunity for a growth stock investment, and so I am in.

Teladoc (TDOC) made an offer to buy out Livongo Health yesterday. LVGO is a great company with an awesome record of growth over the last three years so this doesn’t come as a big surprise. Unfortunately, despite being on my super high interest list, I never re-entered LVGO (I had held it in round 2). That’s a bummer, but this acquisition should really strengthen TDOC, in which I currently have a double position, in the long term.

They went public in April of 2015, but they really didn’t start taking off in the market until 2018. Since then they’ve gone from $11 per share to $136. I didn’t start trading ETSY until 2019. The current valuation is crazy, but we are still riding an incredible bull market.

I’ve continued to add stocks this week (CRSP, NVDA, PANW, PI, ZS), but also closed my position in SDGR. I don’t like the way it’s performing and I think it might take a while for it to consolidate the big gains following its IPO. I also have a cautious eye on ZUO, which has also disappointed. My philosophy is usually sell the losers and add to the winners.

ABMD
ABMD has either been in my portfolio or on my high interest watchlist for a long time. ABMD started out as a company that made an artificial heart. This device was only modestly successful, though, and in the early 2000’s ABMD changed its focus to providing circulatory support devices that are primarily used by cardiologists and heart surgeons. In other words, they now provide devices that assist the heart rather than replace it. This new model has been wildly successful for ABMD and since 2011, they have grown revenue and profit significantly every single year. Unfortunately, the stock experienced a major hiccup in late 2019 partially because of a mistake by the FDA that caused the company a major publicity headache. Top-line growth slowed and the share price dropped to 1/3 of its all time high. Even with these setbacks, however, the company continued to grow, and in my eyes, presented a significant buying opportunity. Since bottoming out in March, 2020, the stock has been on a tear, more than doubling from a low of $119 to the current $300 level. Since this is still $150 off its all time high, and since revenue and profit growth are both on track for 9% this year, YoY, there is still a lot of room for share price growth here, and so I’m in with a full position.

DDOG
DDOG makes a monitoring and analytics platform for developers, IT operations teams and business users. Its platform integrates and automates infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring and log management. The solutions offered by the company include Financial Services, Manufacturing & Logistics, Media & Entertainment and Gaming among others. DDOG is fairly new to the market with its IPO in 2019. The growth story has been spectacular and is far from over. Since 2017 they have quadrupled their revenue, and although they have not yet achieved profitability, they are well on their way. I like this product and this space, and I’m a sucker for a growth story so I’m in with a full position.

EBS
EBS offers health products to government and healthcare providers through four main business units: vaccines, devices (e.g. nasal sprays, skin lotions, and injections), therapeutics (this includes antibody-based treatments), contract development and manufacturing (bringing treatments to market through collaboration with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and the United States government). It is because of the fourth business unit that I have developed a strong interest in EBS. The growth story has not been that spectacular. However, this company is positioned to play a major role in the delivery of a COVID-19 vaccine. They are not going to be the developer of a vaccine, but because of their close business relationship with the government and because of their existing infrastructure for manufacturing and delivering vaccines, it is very likely that they will be a player once a vaccine is developed. Basically, I’m not betting on THE VACCINE with EBS, I’m betting on A VACCINE, i.e. it doesn’t matter which companies successfully develop a vaccine, I’m betting that whomever it is, EBS will be involved in the manufacturing and deployment processes. I am therefore playing EBS as a COVID-19 play, but only with a half position (I have two other COVID-19 plays).

ETSY
ETSY is an American retailer of handmade goods, vintage items, and crafted goods. Sellers list products on ETSY's platform in categories including clothing and accessories, jewelry, craft supplies and tools, wedding accessories and clothing, entertainment items, home and living, vintage items, and child and baby goods. ETSY has done an excellent job of developing their brand as one of the shopping places for upscale fashion. Their numbers reflect their success as revenue has grown from $75 million in 2013 to $818 million 2019. They have posted YoY revenue growth every single year since 2013, and in the last three years, their profit growth has been spectacular, increasing from $15 million in 2017 to $88.76 million in 2019. The real enticer here is that they are serving a huge potential market that has been estimated to be about $2 trillion. I like the growth numbers, the brand positioning, and the servable market, so I am in with a full position.

FLGT
FLGT focuses on genetic testing to provide physicians with clinically actionable diagnostic information. The testing that FLGT provides offers the possibility of early identification of diseases or the genetic predisposition to diseases which permits enhanced disease treatment and prognosis. The big enticement here is that FLGT is still in the early stages of growth. The growth they have exhibited so far has been spectacular, with revenue growth of 2400% between 2013 and 2019. As a still early stage company, they have not yet achieved profitability, but with their excellent products, solid business model, and huge served market, the future prospects for FLGT are outstanding. This is one of my favorite growth stocks, and I am in with a full position.

MDLA
MDLA is a software company that offers a SaaS platform, the Medallia Experience Cloud, that captures experience data from signal fields emitted by customers and employees. It utilizes AI technology to analyze structured and unstructured data from these signal fields across human, digital and internet of things, or IoT, interactions. The company provides solutions to various industries including Automotive, Healthcare, Hospitality, Insurance and Retail among others. I have liked this company for a while because of their very unique product. The whole idea of their technology is to improve the experience of client customers and employees and they have a suite of four products designed to do just this:

• Customer Experience (CX): This is Medallia's flagship product, which enables enterprises to manage their relationships with customers throughout their lifecycle.
• Business Experience (BX): This product suite is designed to increase value and loyalty for customers who primarily do business with other businesses (B2B).
• Employee Experience (EX): This software helps enterprises gain insights into their employees' experiences so they can improve engagement and create a high-performance corporate culture.
• Product Experience (PX): This product suite enables enterprises to gain insights into every aspect of the product life cycle so they can build better products.

The growth story has been solid at MDLA over the last three years (their IPO was in 2019) with 54% growth in revenue. As an early stage company, they are not yet profitable, but with their spectacular growth numbers, this is only a matter of time. I love the product and the growth story, and so I am in (again), but only for a half position.

OLED
OLED researches, develops, and manufactures organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technologies for use in displays for mobile phones, tablets, televisions, wearables, personal computers, automotive interiors, and the solid-state lighting market. This is definitely an infrastructure play as I am betting that OLED displays will continue to permeate the market as more and more devices adopt the technology. Remember that the vast majority of screen real estate in consumer products rights now is still LCD. The recent growth story is starting to reflect the move to OLED. After a hiccup in 2018, the company grew revenue from $247 million in 2018 to $405 million in 2019, a phenomenal 64% increase. Even with the COVID-19 impact on the consumer goods markets, OLED is on track to again grow revenue to $429 million this year, a 6% increase. Profit has also grown phenomenally since 2018, increasing 177% in 2019 and on track for an increase of 6% this year. I think the time is right for this stock, so I am in while their is still an opportunity.


REGN
REGN discovers, develops, and commercializes products that fight eye disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammation, but I have to thank Paco for clueing me to this stock. The real reason I took an interest in REGN was because of its work on addressing the COVID-19 crisis. REGN is using its end-to-end antibody technologies to develop REGN-COV2, a novel anti-viral antibody cocktail that is being studied for its potential both to treat people with COVID-19 and to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Clinical trials of REGN-COV2 began in mid-June and the clinical program currently consists of three ongoing late-stage trials: two adaptive Phase 1/2/3 trials for treatment of hospitalized and non-hospitalized (“ambulatory”) COVID-19 patients and a Phase 3 trial for the prevention of COVID-19 in uninfected people who are at high-risk of exposure to a COVID-19 patient (such as the patient’s housemate). The Phase 3 prevention trial is being jointly conducted with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The bottom line is that REGN is pretty far along with its development and is very likely to be one of the winners in terms of providing a product for treating and/or preventing COVID-19. So I took a shot here and I am in.

TDOC
TDOC is a virtual health provider with a telehealth platform delivering 24-hour, on-demand healthcare via mobile devices, the Internet, video, and phone. Most of the company’s revenues are generated on a subscription basis (per-member-per-month) and the balance comes from visit fees. Since inception, TDOC has primarily partnered with employers, health plans, and health systems to offer network access to their members, however, most recently, the company has also started to market directly to consumers while expanding its service portfolio. By the description alone, you can probably see why I am interested in this stock. The COVID-19 pandemic has worked to bring companies like TDOC to the forefront as the healthcare system evolves into a new era in which telemedicine will be an integral part of standard medical practice. Even before the pandemic, TDOC’s growth had been spectacular. Revenue grew from $20 million in 2013 to $553 million in 2019, or 2600% in growth over a 6 year period. This year, revenue is on target to top $716 million for a 29% increase in a single year. What’s really exciting is that the U.S. Telemedicine Market size was valued at $6.61 billion in 2019 and is anticipated to reach $17.14 Billion by 2026 with a CAGR of 14.6% during the forecast period. With growth and potential like this, you can see why a growth investor like me is excited about this stock. This is one of my favorite stocks and, once again, I am in.

VCYT
VCYT is a genomic diagnostics company. It provides genomic diagnostic products and services to improve patient care against diseases such as thyroid cancer, lung cancer, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. VCYT was a relatively new addition to my high interest stocks. It popped up on a scan for growth stocks and when I looked at the revenue numbers, liked what I saw. The company has grown revenue of $2.65 million in 2011 to $120.37 million in 2019 or $4400%, with growth every year. When I dug a little deeper into their technology I liked them even more. Basically they are using proprietary machine-learning algorithms to detect genetic patterns specific to each disease they study. This allows them to create products that help medical professionals make more accurate diagnoses, which, in turn, improves patient outcomes. VCYT is truly another company on the cutting edge of a new wave of medicine, and I am in.

I have made a few changes to the summary this week. The first change is that I adjusted the number of possible positions to 65. This is more consistent with my actual number of available positions. I originally just chose 100 as an arbitrary number. Other than that, the spreadsheet hasn’t changed and now more accurately reflects my actual cash vs stock balances, and the return against principal. It now accurately shows that I am 70% invested at this point, i.e. I am 30% in cash.

The second change was for the sake of space, I hid closed transactions and just showed the total performance.

The third change is that I have split my long term (LT) watchlists into three groups: Super High Interest, High Interest, and Some Interest. I felt I needed to do this for my own purposes so I would know which stocks I should be focusing my attention on in terms of getting an entry. On that note, I really blew it with AAPL this week. It is on my Super High Interest watchlist and I was ready to pull the trigger early in the week on the little base it formed around $380. I hesitated, however, and on Friday it rocketed up an on upgrade. **Sigh**. You can’t win ‘em all. I still have a couple of favorites on my Super High Interest watchlist, and I will continue to look at these hard for entry opportunities.

The fourth change is that I will now try to provide a write up on the stocks I add each week. I did quite a bit of buying this week and didn’t have time to finish the write ups on every new stock, but I left placeholders and will try to complete them during the week. I may have to put this info into a separate post because of the size of the table.

Round 4 summary as of market close, July 24, 2020

Well, we had a modest sized pullback in the NASDAQ this week. This pullback negated a fair portion of my gains and pushed a number of positions into the red. In the past, NASDAQ pullbacks to the lower boundary of its regression channel, have been buying opportunities. I therefore took a chance and instead of selling into the pullback, I bought as the NASDAQ bounced today and added quite a few positions. I’ll have to watch this closely now because there is always the chance that this time the index will slice through the regression channel and head downward for a big correction, which I don’t want to sit through. I still have a ton of cash (63%), but still I don’t want to watch 37% of my capital languish through a bear market, so I’ll just have to watch things closely and hope I time any exits accurately. I’m still doing a lot of day/swing trading, and may rely on that more and more until one of those super buying opportunities shows up.

Bought my first “blank check,” or Special-Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) stock this week, IPOB. Blank check companies are used as vehicles for reorganizations, mergers, acquisitions, or recapitalizations, i.e. they are shell companies. If you remember, someone recently posted a question about another SPAC, TKKS. My recommendation at the time was to steer clear unless they had some insight into what the business model of the SPAC was. This was unclear for TKKS, but I recently came across three SPACs (IPOA, IPOB, and IPOC) that were set up by Social Capital Hedosophia, a California corporation, for the purpose of acquiring technology companies. I took notice of them because the first of the three, IPOA, eventually became Virgin Galactic Holdings (SPCE), a company I currently have a position in. I decided to take a shot with IPOB because of a recommendation, because of the prior success of IPOA, and because there is some sort of news pending on IPOB according to Dow Jones newswire (I have no idea what this news is). I may have to sit on this one for a few years, but I opened a half position this week as a speculative play. If it duplicates what happened with SPCE, I will be a happy camper.

We had a little pullback at the end of last week/early this week, so I took the opportunity to pick up a few of my favorite stocks. It was a risky move, considering the valuations and how extended the market is to the upside. I didn’t feel I was getting enough return on principle, however, because I am still mostly in cash. So I decided to pull the trigger. It means more things to close down should the market dive into a deep correction, but it also means more opportunities for gains. We’ll see.

I did some more buying this week, continuing to cautiously insert myself into the market to try and ride the current bullishness. I’m still a little nervous, but as long as the economic news is good and the COVID news is not devastating, I believe we’ll see continued bullishness. I will ay this, though, the valuations on some the growth stocks I like is currently atmospheric, which is keeping me from diving in.
